Have you seen this month's National Geographic? There is a story in there about the "Green Sahara" of 8-10,000 years ago. There was a relatively short peoriod when the monsoon rains went farther north. The Sahel bloomed and there were even lakes. (Hence the life sized Giraffe petroglyph in Niger.)
Your constant travails with rain made me think of this. Maybe climate change is going to bring more rain to you in NM.
