...al-souk (we transliterate this Arabic word meaning "marketplace" as AL souk...but it's actually pronounced AS-souk), in the same way that bismillah al-rahman al-raheem is actually pronounced bismillah AR-rahman AR-raheem. I wonder (too often of course) why we spell things differently from how they're actually pronounced. Seems to me it just leads to confusion. And well, in some sense a basic misinterpretation of other cultures and their languages.
I think I'll wonder about that some more today...since IT'S RAINING!
